Experience the beautiful acoustics as hundreds of burning candles form an enchanting backdrop for the candlelight concert series. Arrive at central Amsterdam's Portuguese Synagogue up to 30 minutes before the performance and proceed directly to your seat. Take advantage of your early arrival by enjoying the romantic atmosphere of this magnificent 17th-century Sephardic synagogue and its hundreds of burning candles. Once the musicians take the stage, relax and enjoy an enthralling hour-long concert of timeless compositions, brought to the life by the virtuoso players and the synagogue’s magnificent acoustics. Please note: performances vary depending on the evening. The full concert listings are as follows: Trio C tot de Derde Thursday 17th January at 7:30 PM Trio C tot de Derde play klezmer in the broadest sense of the word, with the musicians invoking Balkan music, gypsy, jazz and classical music. Their new programme Klez-X! (pronounced: classics) focuses on new and old classics of the genre. Rembrandt Frerichs Trio & David Kweksilber Thursday 28th February at 7:30 PM The Rembrandt Frerichs Trio has been touring the Netherlands and abroad for years, combining classical music, jazz and music from the Middle East. David Kweksilber accompanies the Trio perfectly, as he too effortlessly switches between classical and jazz. Carolyn Enger Thursday 28th February at 8:00 PM The American pianist is known for her thoughtful, sensitive and expressive playing. Her latest programme is called Mischlinge Exposé, which contains music by composers who were labelled half-Jews by the Nazi regime, such as her own father. Yuri Honing Acoustic Quartet Thursday 11th April at 8:00 PM In 2018, Yuri Honing won an Edison in the category 'Jazz National'. ‘Unique in every possible way and of the highest level,' the jury concluded. Along with his acoustic quartet, Yuri will be coming to the Portuguese Synagogue on the 11th of April. Brisk Thursday 17th June at 8:00 PM Brisk presents songs dating from the Middle Ages and Renaissance Era from the Iberian Peninsula, played on 40 recorders in all shapes and sizes. The Amsterdam quartet is 'the final blow to the goody-goody image of the recorder'. Grachtenfestival Thursday 15th August at 8:00 PM During the annual Grachtenfestival, concerts take place at special locations all over Amsterdam. The Portuguese Synagogue is always one of the highlights. The artist will be announced later. Ticket €18.50 Concert in collaboration with the Leo Smit Foundation Thursday 26th September at 8:00 PM The Leo Smit Foundation collects and disseminates knowledge about composers who were persecuted during the Second World War. This concert, conducted by flutist Eleonore Pameijer, ensure that the memory of these composers lives on. Noa Wildschut Thursday 31st October at 7:30 PM Despite her age, this Dutch violinist (18) has already gained a considerable reputation in the Netherlands and abroad. The NRC Handelsblad praised her great tone and personality, 'and, above all: a boundless musicality'. Lumaka Thursday 28th November at 7:30 PM Lumaka is one of the most active chamber music ensembles in the Netherlands, with a surprising line-up of harp, flute and strings. The program includes late-Romantic and impressionistic music by, among others, a number of Jewish-Dutch composers.
