DescriptionThe Museum of Bags and Purses was established from the private collections of Hendrikje and Heinz Ivo. From their residence in Amstelveen, the museum moved to a splendid building on Herengracht, which is a part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Amsterdam Canal Ring Area. It has become one of the world's 10 most highly regarded fashion museums. Spend an enjoyable hour exploring the collection that comprises more than 5,000 bags. You’ll find pieces dating from the 15th century as well as classics of modern design from world-renowned fashion houses such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Hermès. Temporary Exhibition: It’s a Men’s World (through 27 August 2017) From football stars and hipsters to business tycoons and metro men, few today would be caught without a bag to go with whatever they’re wearing. This might seem a modern phenomenon but the man's bag is a centuries-old tradition. It’s a Men’s World is an exhibition that focuses on the world of the man's bag – from historic satchels to the latest contemporary designs and masculine it-bags. A theme running throughout the exhibition is Fashion or Function? When does a man decide to carry a bag, and when is a pants pocket sufficient? Temporary Exhibition: Cut! Bags in Movies (autumn 2017) The relationship between fashion, bags and film plays the starring role in the autumn exhibition at The Museum of Bags and Purses. During this exhibition, bags that earned their iconic status on the silver screen are literally in the spotlight. Some good examples are the Fendi baguette from Sex and the City and the Louis Vuitton luggage from The Darjeeling Limited. This exhibition addresses various themes such as Fashion & Film, The Bag as a Murder Weapon, The Bag as a Real Partner in Crime and The Bag as Emotional Baggage (about bags in drama films).
