Description

Understand the city's history in order to fully grasp the present. Help to create a positive future by going on a self-guided walking tour, where you will have the opportunity to learn about and give back to the local communities in Amsterdam. Pick one of four tour options, which cover a variety of contemporary issues. While visiting local neighborhoods, discover the Amsterdam most people never get to see. Connect on a personal level with people and places and help to preserve the beauty and culture of Amsterdam. Start at the meeting point and be greeted by a host to get you started and answer any questions that you have. Your host will give a 30-minute introduction and set some challenges so that you can discover the area on your own. You will also participate in two meet-and-greets with local projects.  There are 4 different tours available, each with their own themes and neighborhoods: NDSM Wharf - Counterculture Take a free 15-minute ferry ride from Amsterdam Central Station and discover the stories of Amsterdam counter-culture on the old NDSM wharf. Go to an area of Amsterdam where you can see the past, the present, and the future combined in a single space. Learn about how the area developed from a Dutch shipbuilding hub to a breeding ground for creative talent. Hear stories about city nomads, craftsmen, and artists and answer questions about the commercialization of the district. Amsterdam East - Colonialism and Fair Trade Delver deep into the history of Dutch Trade, the 'Golden Age', and the dark colonial past. Walk through the beautiful and little-visited neighborhood around Czaar Peter Street in East Amsterdam. Learn about mistakes from the past and how this can create the possibility to do things differently in the future. Visit the Cacao Museum and taste samples of the best single-origin chocolate the world. Red Light District - Beyond the Curtains Look beyond and not just behind the curtains. Learn about the long history and the complexities of prostitution. Encounter another side of the Red Light District and hear the stories of local pioneers. Listen to change-makers share their future vision of this area with you. Amsterdam Green East - Urban Agriculture Get inspired to change the way you think, eat, and consume. Discover new ways of urban farming and the rising potential of green cities. See how agriculture in the city is thriving, visit local gardens, and learn about their harvests.
