Join me on an easy going 5km canoe tour from the Eastern Docklands to the Eastern Islands in Amsterdam East. Where buildings and water tell the story of Amsterdam from the 17th century to present day
Highlights
- Seeing Amsterdam East from the water is a treat
- Paddling under the replica of 17th century VOC Vessel 'Amsterdam'
- Fancy a swim at the end of our tour?
Description
We will meet at Borneokade 16, where you'll find me with a bunch of inflatable canoes at the quay.
After a seriously good coffee/tea/chocolate, 'stroopwafels' for energy boost and some do's (enjoy!) and don'ts (don't pet the swan!)..off we go!
Start: Eastern Dockland
Our tour will start in the Eastern Docklands, my hood and former 19th century sea harbour, transformed in a residential area in the 1990's. The old warehouses, now apartments, quays and waterways betray the regions original purpose.
Heading for: Eastern Islands
After our start we will be heading for the Eastern Islands. The area was first developed for shipping industry in the late 17th century, during the 4th expansion of Amsterdam. Later in the 19th century huge factory halls were constructed for (steam) railway and (ship) engine industry. In recent years it has become a thrilling area with combined industrial-heritage with modern residential buildings, a vibrant and exiting part of the city.
