Description
Too often, the stories of Jewish Amsterdammers are limited to the 20th century. This small-group walking tour explores how Amsterdam’s Jewish community shaped this unique city. An engaging guide tells stories of Jewish Amsterdammers in chronological order, to give you a sense of how the city and community evolved.
The tour begins at a picturesque overlook where your guide will tell you the story of the first Sephardic immigrants. You’ll then stroll through the quiet Uilenburg into the busy Waterlooplein, whose market was the heart of Jewish Amsterdam, and then on to the Ashkenazi and Sephardic synagogues from the 17th and 18th centuries. At each stop, you'll hear unique stories from across trades and social levels.
You’ll then walk through the wealthy Plantage to the Jewish section of the canal belt, including the Holocaust Name Memorial. The tour finishes with inspirational stories of Jewish Amsterdammers who continued to change Amsterdam - and the world - throughout the 20th century.
You’ll leave inspired, with a sense of the full history of this vibrant community.
