Jan Six was an important man in 17th century, the Dutch Golden Age. Born into a prestigious family, Jan Six eventually became the Mayor of Amsterdam. The author of famed story Medea, Six associated with renowned painter Rembrandt van Rijn and poet Joost van den Vondel. At the Jan Six House Museum, there are original 17th century paintings by Rembrandt and other known artists. The uniqueness of this museum is that it is in a 58-room mansion and contributed to by the family that lives upstairs, the descendents of Mr. Six himself. Yes, this private home has been in the same family for 11 generations and offers one of the best art collections in the city. Also, it is free, though reservations are appreciated.
