Hiking & Trekking in Amsterdam

If you think Amsterdam is only about canals and bikes, think again. Just outside the city, you’ll find some surprisingly nice spots for walking and hiking if you want a break from the urban hum.

The Amsterdamse Bos is the obvious go-to, a massive man-made forest with winding paths that feel much wilder than you’d expect so close to the city center. I like going there in spring when the bluebells carpet the forest floor , it’s easy to forget you’re still in Amsterdam. You can mix long trails with shorter loops, and there’s even a goat farm if you want a quirky stop along the way.

If you’re up for something a bit different, check out the Amsterdam Waterleidingduinen. It’s a bit farther but totally worth it. You’ll walk among dunes and spot wildlife like deer quietly roaming in their natural environment. Just bring good shoes; parts can get a bit sandy.

One tip: avoid weekends if you want peace, especially in the Bos. Early mornings are magic. Also, pack a reusable bottle , lots of public taps along the trails mean you won’t need to buy plastic bottles on your walk. These green escapes make you realize how lucky Amsterdam is to balance city life and nature so well.
