Homomonument
Amsterdam
Located close to the Anne Frank House and to the Westerkerk is the Homomonument. It is dedicated to members of the LGBT community who have been persecuted due to their sexuality. Created in 1987, the words 'Such an endless desire for friendship' are engraved in Dutch. The granite monument remembers the long journey that the LGBT community has faced and the challenges they continue to face. By placing this monument in the city center, the importance of the freedom of all people is stressed. The concept of freedom is strong in the daily lives of Dutch people, and Amsterdam, as a city of tolerance, has long been a hot spot for the gay community.
